TOPIC 4:TIME MANAGEMENT & ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS

•The Meaning of Time Management

•Strategy Of Study

  • Fixed-Commitment Calendar

Managing your time effectively is crucial to your success. For students transitioning from high school to college, one of the most difficult things to do is schedule study time. In high school, you spent more time in class than you do now that you are in college. In college, it is up to you to make sure you are studying as much as you need to.The best way to ensure that you’re not wasting time and studying sufficiently is to make a schedule that you commit to keeping. To do so, you might consider using a fixed-commitment calendar.

A study timetable is a plan that outlines when and for how long you will study each subject. It can be a very helpful tool for students of all ages, as it can help you to stay organized, on track, and motivated.

  • Job Task Analysis

  • Prioritized Task List

TOPIC 5: MEMORY, LEARNING & IMPROVING CONCENTRATION

What is memory?

Memory is the process of taking in information from the world around us, processing it, storing it and later recalling that information, sometimes many years later.

What is brain?

The brain is a complex organ made up of billions of neurons and other cells. It serves as the control center for your entire body, managing functions like thoughts, memories, emotions, sensory experiences, and movements.

There are three types of memory :

  • SENSORY MEMORY – numerous incoming information from 5 senses will be stored in sensory memory for an instant. When you pay attention to the stimuli it will go to the short-term memory, but if you not pay attention it would not be last long and may lost .
  • SHORT-TERM MEMORY – our short term memory have only limited storage. The information must be repeated in order to get information to long-term memory .
  • LONG- TERM MEMORY–our long term memory is unlimited and have large storage. If the information is not being used for long time. The information will be lost-thinking of nothing else

ACTIVITY 2:

RANDOM NUMBERS

There's a lot of advantages from this activity. This activity help students to improve their memory skills. This type of games will challenge student's short-term and long-term memory, helping to strengthen their ability to retain and recall information.Besides,it also encourages mental agility. It helps students to think quickly and adapt to new challenges, which can be beneficial in problem-solving.

What is Memory Strategy?

A memory strategy is a technique that you can use in order to help improve remembering information that you have learned. There are many techniques out there that you can learn, both internal and external.

TOPIC  6: TAKING LECTURE NOTES

WHY TAKE LECTURE NOTES?

1. Promotes active listening

2. Provides an accurate record of information

3. Provides an opportunity to interpret, condense and organize information

4. Provides an opportunity for repetition of the material

Note-Taking exercise using the Cornell Method:

Step 1: RECORD LECTURE NOTES.

Step 2: REVIEW YOUR NOTES and CREATE YOUR SELF-TEST COLUMN.

Step 3: SUMMARIZE YOUR NOTES.

Step 4: TEST YOURSELF.

Stage 5: REHEARSE THE INFORMATION FREQUENTLY.

Review/self-test column.

Record your lecture notes in the column

Summary.

ADVANTAGES OF USING THE CORNELL METHOD:

1. Structured Organization: The method divides a page into sections for notes, cues, and summaries, making it easy to categorize and review information.

2. Active Learning: It encourages students to actively engage with the material by summarizing and questioning the content, rather than just passively writing it down.

3. Enhanced Retention: The summarization and review process helps reinforce memory and understanding of the material.

4. Efficient Review: The cue column allows students to quickly identify key points and concepts, making revision more efficient.

5. Improved Focus: The method promotes attentiveness during lectures or study sessions by providing a clear framework for note-taking.

TOPIC 7: ACADEMIC INTEGRITY & PERFORMANCE

WHAT IS PLAGIARISM?

Plagiarism is the act of using someone else's work, ideas, or intellectual property without proper acknowledgment, presenting it as your own. It can involve copying text, images, music, code, or any creative output without giving credit to the original creator. Plagiarism is considered unethical and can have serious consequences in academic, professional, and creative settings.

How to Prevent Plagiarism?

STEP 1: PLANNING YOUR PAPER

-Plan Your Paper

-Take Effective Notes

STEP 2: WRITING YOUR PAPER

-Cite Sources (for citation reference, use APA format).

-Make It Clear Who Said What

-Know How to Paraphrase

-Evaluate Your Sources

-Include a Reference Page

APA STYLE

We need to follow the exact format to cite sources. The format is

Family name, First name initials, (year of publication) , Title of book , Place of publication, Publisher.

Foe Example:

Lee, H. (1960). To kill a mockingbird. New York: Grand Central Publishing.

What is GPA?

GPA stands for Grade Point Average. GPA is a number that shows a student’s academic achievement. It is calculated by using a grading scale. For example, if a student gets a grade of "A" in a course, it is worth 4 points. If they get a “B”, it is worth 3, and so on. The points are then added together and divided by the total number of courses the student has taken.

What is CGPA?

CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average, a grading system used to assess a student's overall academic performance over a specified period, such as a semester or the entire course duration. It is calculated by averaging the Grade Points obtained in all the subjects, weighted by the number of credits assigned to each subject.
